housing the yearlings

About Chistmas or soon after, all the cattle come home for the remainder of the winter.

Yesterday Lizzie , Gillian and I brought home the yearlings , the last of our away cattle , from Gillian's hill . They were charming , mooching unconcerned along the lanes grazing all the ivy , moss and fern they could reach . Housing them into groups by age and sex was a bit of a game , and then much pushing and wrestling to establish new pecking orders. In so doing they trash their straw bed so I leave them to it . Today they get a new one and are so pleased with it playing bulls with the bale and doing handstands . Once the dust settled they lay down contentedly , chewing the cud and burping and looking clean and lovely.
